Cultivating a Guest Space

— by Sleep Outfitters on Mar 25, 2024

Whether for holidays, family reunions, or catching up with old friends, hosting involves prepping your home for visitors. Providing a comfortable, welcoming space is always appreciated, so here are a few pointers for offering a well-equipped guest room.

Pick the Right Mattress

This may seem obvious, but having comfortable sleeping arrangements is essential. Try sleeping in your guest room before your visitor’s arrival, even if it’s just for a short nap. If you’re feeling any discomfort, odds are your guest will, too. It may be time to get a new mattress. If square footage allows, a king-size bed is best for couples, but a queen is also sufficient. Two twin mattresses placed together for a couple or separated for single sleepers is another versatile option. No matter the size, great accommodations start with a quality bed.

Keep it Comfortable

Making sure your guest feels at ease is crucial when hosting. The right mattress is important, but suitable sheets, pillows, blankets, and other accessories are necessary for a complete guest room. If your pillows feel old or outdated, it’s probably time to invest in new ones. Certain pillows allow for multiple sleeping positions, and if in doubt, purchase those ideal for side sleepers since they’re most common. Remember to add fresh sheets and a warm comforter when refreshing your guest room to create a better atmosphere.

Declutter the Space

The spare room is often used for storage when not accommodating visitors. Extra clothes, luggage, decorations, you name it; a messy room can get in the way of your guest. Ample space in either a closet or dresser should be available to hold their belongings. If your guests’ sleep space doubles as a living room or another common area, be sure to clean up any clutter and provide as much privacy as possible.

Entertaining is no easy feat, but with the right hosting hacks (and a comfortable mattress), you can give your guests a cozy room to call their home away from home.
