Twenty-three-year-old Louisville native and University of Kentucky graduate Kim Brown Knopf opened her first mattress store, Mattress Warehouse, in South Charleston, W.Va. in 1983. Nearly 20 years later, when she wanted to expand her company into her native Kentucky, the Mattress Warehouse name was owned by another company in that state. So, the Kentucky mattress stores opened under a new name, Sleep Outfitters.
Today, the Lexington-based parent company, Sleep Outfitters USA, employs more than 300 people and operates approximately 100 stores in six states (Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Alabama). The company operates under the names of Sleep Outfitters, Mattress Warehouse, and Mattress King, and features America’s most iconic bedding brands – Sealy, Tempur-Pedic and Stearns & Foster.
