Spring Cleaning Your Mattress
Mar 28, 2019
Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth and, for many, cleaning. The physical cleaning of your space, through scrubbing or purging, is a signal of a new season and a new start. While spring cleaning your house, don’t forget your bedroom and, more specifically, your mattress. Below are some tips for cleaning your mattress and its accessories.
Start with your mattress
You’ve spent a long, cold winter snuggled up in bed, so now it’s time to freshen it up. Start by stripping the bed down to a bare mattress removing all comforters, sheets, mattress protectors, and bed skirts in the process; we’ll discuss linens and protector cleaning later. Sprinkle baking soda over the entire mattress surface. This will draw out dirt, including dust mites, and moisture. Let it sit for a couple of hours. Use a vacuum to clean up the baking soda
Some people opt to leave the baking soda on the mattress and then make the bed on top of the baking soda. When it's time to wash the sheets and mattress protector again, they strip the bed and vacuum up the baking soda, along with all of the dust and dirt that has accumulated in the meantime.
Linens are up next
Bed linens include sheets, pillowcases, comforters, mattress protectors, and bed skirts. When it comes to bed linens, the most efficient and effective way to clean them is in the washing machine, unless you know they are dry clean only! However, most linens these days do not require dry cleaning, just a large-capacity washing machine. Wash in the hottest water the fabric will allow, as well as the highest spin cycle, and then dry at the hottest setting. This should be your regular bed linen cleaning process, but sometimes it’s not conducive to using the mentioned settings if you are mixing in your regular laundry, as sheets should be washed at least every week.
Don’t forget your pillows
Pillows should be cleaned at least every three to four months. Make sure that your pillows are able to be washed in a washing machine. Memory foam pillows are not able to go through a washing machine, but most of the time, their covers can be washed. However, For most pillows, you can combine ¼ cup of dishwashing detergent, ¼ cup of laundry detergent (liquid or powdered), and ¼ cup of washing soda. Place the mixture with your pillows in your washer and wash at the highest spin cycle. Afterward, place the pillows with three dryer balls in your dryer and let them dry up! This will freshen up your pillows, get rid of stains and eliminate any lingering smells that you might find.
Nothing beats climbing into fresh sheets, so can you imagine what it will feel like to climb into a bed that has been completely deep-cleaned?
