So, we’re two months into the new year, and you’ve begun to eat a healthier diet and get yourself some regular, moderate exercise. You’re on your way to a healthier, more energetic, more productive you.
Now, you’ve decided to invest in the third leg of the healthy living trifecta -- your sleep – and you’ve resolved to replace the mattress you’ve been sleeping on for the last eight to 10 (or more?) years. You walk into your nearest Sleep Outfitters and you’re confronted with 30 to 40 fluffy white rectangles and words such as wrapped coils, memory foam, pillow top and split king.
Yikes!
Fear not. We at Sleep Outfitters understand that folks who haven’t shopped for a mattress in eight or 10, or even 15, years can be shocked at the sheer numbers of mattress choices.
Traditional innerspring mattresses are anything but traditional, featuring precision crafted coils for support and, perhaps, memory foam or gel material for the comfort layer.
And ten years ago, hardly anyone talked about adjustable foundations that allow you to raise and lower the head and foot of the bed in order to find the most comfortable position for reading, sleeping or watching TV in bed. Oh, and did we mention that these bases also give you a massage?
And then there’s Tempur-Pedic, one of the first manufacturers to construct a bed of something other than covered innersprings. The Tempur material used in the product’s manufacture was invented by NASA for its astronauts. Today, it serves many an earthbound sleeper as “the most highly recommended bed in America,” to parrot Tempur-Pedic’s advertising.
For some sleepers, mattresses constructed of foams, instead of springs, tend to retain heat. Tempur-Pedic has been a leader in developing cooling technology for its Tempur material mattresses with its Tempur Breeze line designed to help “hot” sleepers get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer.
And finally, there are the hybrids, which feature metal innersprings for support and a memory foam layer for comfort.
So, where do you – who has resolved to eat healthier, exercise more and sleep better – begin the mattress selection process?
The Sleep Assessment
The goal of a good night’s sleep is to rejuvenate, recharge and refresh. It seems a shame, if the first step toward improving one’s sleep – shopping for a new mattress – turns out to be stressful. Sleep Outfitters attempts to make mattress-shopping a rewarding and cooperative experience by helping the customer find the right bed through a personal sleep assessment.
Most of us will spend one-third of our lives sleeping. Most of us will not spend that much time on any other piece of furniture, save perhaps an office chair. So, it is important that you be properly fitted (outfitted?) for your new mattress. With a sleep assessment, your Sleep Outfitters retail sales associate (RSA) will attempt to match you with the right mattress by learning about your personal sleep habits and conditions.
Here’s what you can expect. Your RSA will ask you to lie on a Tempur-Pedic Rhapsody Breeze (one of our finest mattresses) positioned atop an adjustable foundation. This will be your basis for comparison with the other mattresses you’ll try.
Next, the RSA will ask several questions about your sleep habits, such as how many hours do you and your partner sleep each night, and whether you are back, side or stomach sleepers. The RSA will also inquire about any neck, shoulder, back or hip pain you may have, or if you toss, turn or wake up during the night.
The RSA will also ask whether you or your partner suffer from sleep apnea, snoring, sinus conditions or circulatory problems.
Finally, the RSA will manipulate the adjustable foundation you’re lying on to put you into a “zero gravity” position, which relieves any pressure points on your body. He or she will note whether you experienced any pressure or pain after returning the mattress to the flat position, in order to determine whether an adjustable base might be beneficial for you.
Next, based on information gleaned from the assessment, the Sleep Outfitters RSA will recommend you try other mattresses to see how they compare to the Tempur-Pedic. Ultimately, no one but you can determine which mattress feels the most comfortable.
The RSA will also present financing options for your purchase. Terms go up to five years with no interest every day, and up to six years interest-free during special promotional periods. There is also a program to help those customers with credit challenges obtain a new mattress set.
But before you have to talk to a single soul about mattresses, you can go to Sleep Outfitters.com and see the complete product line and store locations, so that when you do visit a store near you, you’ll be a better-informed consumer.
Rejuvenate, recharge, refresh! Here’s hoping your New Year’s resolutions to start (or continue) living a healthier lifestyle are underway.
