Here’s a radical idea: You could be sleeping better.

Okay, so it’s an assertion unlikely to raise any eyebrows. Most of us will readily and eagerly acknowledge, even brag of our sleepless nights, our long hours hard at work, our early morning risings and late night shenanigans. For some, it’s a badge of honor; for others, it’s an unfortunate reality. Sleep just isn’t always a priority in this busy life.

So let me raise the stakes: You should be sleeping better.

As we march boldly into the new year, there’s little doubt that resolutions for 2017 are already on your mind. And let’s face it, more often than not they are about health, specifically weight loss. We all want to see that scale drop and those clothes loosen. We can’t always see the immediate effects of quality sleep like we can a kickin’ beach bod. But we can certainly feel them. Whether we want to or not, we spend a third of our lives asleep. That’s a stunning figure, even more so when you consider the amount of our lives actually affected by sleep: 100 percent. It affects our work, our eating habits, our love lives, our relationships, and, of course, our health. Lack of sleep is associated obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, stress, high blood pressure, and more. You’d be hard pressed to find a problem in your life that couldn’t be linked to it, or at the very least improved with better sleep. And yet according to a study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three American adults aren’t getting enough sleep (which they consider seven or more hours a night) regularly. That’s not just a shame, that’s a full-blown national health crisis. And besides the occasional trending news article or blog post (*clears throat*), it’s a crisis with little being done to address it.
