Moving soon? If so, you are among the 25 million Americans who choose to move during the warmer months of the year. Whether you’re a first-time home buyer, upsizing, downsizing, or moving to a new apartment across town, there is always the concern of how all of your current furniture is going to fit into your new space. Coincidentally, moving season in America lines up with the most popular times to buy a mattress. It seems that it’s a popular idea to start with a clean slater, err, bed in your new space. Here are some helpful tips on how to choose the right mattress not only for you, but for your new home.

Plan it out

If you can, take physical measurements of your new bedroom before starting your mattress shopping. If you are unable to get into the space beforehand, request a floorplan from your realtor or the property manager. This will at least give you an idea of the area you have to work with. Most modern master bedrooms are large enough to hold a king-size bed and a full suite of furniture, but that might not always be the case. Take into account windows when planning where the bed will go in your new room. Some people like having their bed in front of a window, especially if they like to wake with the sun. Others want the option to keep the sunlight at bay for as long as possible.

Also make sure to plan for how you would get your mattress into your new bedroom. Pay attention to hallways, stairwells, and doorways. While you may not be the one physically moving your new mattress, it will be beneficial to your movers or delivery personnel to know what they will have to work with.

Mattress material matters

If your bedroom will be on the second floor or higher, opt for a mattress or mattress protector with cooling material. Heat rises, so the added comfort of cooling material will ensure a restful, deeper sleep. The opposite is true if you are buying for a bedroom that will be in a basement. While warming material is not often found in a mattress, I would opt for a mattress that does not have any cooling components to it.
