Mattress Size Guide

— by Sleep Outfitters on Feb 8, 2024

The first step in your mattress-buying journey may be determining which size best suits your space and needs. Is your current bed too small? Are you moving into a new home or with a loved one? Are you outfitting a guest bedroom or a child's bedroom? There are many factors to consider when determining the right mattress size, including room space, budget, and personal preference. Thankfully, with a better understanding of the various sizes, you can narrow your options considerably from the start.

A mattress size chart

(Please note that specific mattress sizes may vary by manufacturer.)

Twin Mattress: 39" x 74"

As the smallest standard mattress size, twin or "single" mattresses are perfect for a child's bedroom. You can also use them for day beds and bunk beds. With its petite size, a twin mattress can be a practical solution in tight living spaces or guest bedrooms.

Full Mattress: 54" x 74"

Ideal for one adult, a full or "double" mattress provides greater width compared to a twin. Keep in mind that if two people are sleeping on a full mattress, there will only be 27" of sleeping space for each—equal to a crib's width. Those over 5'5" tall may also have difficulties with the length of the mattress.

Queen Mattress: 60" x 80"

As the most popular size sold, the queen mattress still reigns supreme by affording additional space to sleepers. A queen is an excellent choice if you don't have enough room in your primary bedroom for a king. Queen beds are also great for guest rooms and single sleepers who like to spread out when they sleep. For two sleepers, each person has only 9" less than they would enjoy alone on a twin mattress.

King Mattress: 76" X 80"

While identical in length to a queen, 16" of extra width can mean a lot to sleepers. Two people can have considerable space in a king or "eastern/standard king" mattress, which can help achieve a good night's sleep. If the size of your bedroom allows, king-size mattresses are typically the mattress of choice for households that desire maximum comfort.

Outside of these well-known standard sizes, additional options are also available.

Specialty Mattress Sizes

Twin XL Mattress: 39" X 80"

Taller solo sleepers rejoice! Compared to a standard twin, an added 5" in the length of a mattress can make a big difference. This size is great for singles or shoppers looking for the perfect dorm room mattress. It's exactly half the size of a king, and two twin XLs create a split king.

California King Mattress: 72" X 84"

As the longest mattress on the market – other than custom-designed options – the California King or "Western King" mattress is perfect for large adults and couples who want the most legroom possible. A popular misconception is that the California King is wider than a king, but it's actually 4" narrower and 4" longer.
