Does Dreaming Affect Your Sleep Quality?


Many people experience multiple different kinds of dreams at night. Whether it may be considered a dream or a nightmare, it can affect the type of sleep you are getting.  While there are multiple theories as to why we dream at night, there is not a for sure known answer. Dreams can happen at different parts of the night; however, they are the most vivid when you are in the REM phase. People may experience several different emotions when waking up from a dream, and here are a few explanations as to why:


If you wake up feeling nervous, on edge or a bit anxious due to a dream, that is fairly common. Having a nightmare can be startling, especially if it wakes you up in the middle of the night. Add in trying to fall back asleep after that, and you could run into a serious nightmare hangover. These negative feelings and emotions can linger into the next day, not only affecting the quality of sleep you got that night, but your general attitude the next day.


Having a good dream can have somewhat of a positive affect on your following day. If you were able to sleep the whole way through the night, and remember your dream, you may wake up feeling positive and rested. While there is no proven correlation between the two, it beats being woken up from a nightmare!


All in all, our dreams do not directly influence our sleep, but the thoughts, feelings and perceptions we have absolutely can. If you are someone who has frequent bad dreams or nightmares, try to think throughout the day about what exactly is causing these thoughts. You may be able to avoid your next nightmare more easily than you would think.
